I am so saddened to let you know that dad (Burton Paynter, VP9BP) passed away today, November 27, 2015, at 3:15pm. It happened so quickly once he was removed from support.

Dad had taken a turn for the worse and has been in the ICU for the last 3 weeks. He was on a breathing machine via a tracheotomy. The doctors assured us that there is nothing else they can do for him because his lung infection was so bad and his immune system was so low. We made the decision to pull life support this afternoon -- as dad would never want to live in the condition he's in.

Sympathy cards for Burton Paynter, VP9BP, can be sent to my parents home address is:

1008 15 1/2 St. N.
Moorhead, MN
56560

I should have information about services by Monday but they will be held in Moorhead, MN later in the week/next week.

Please let me know if you need anything else from me right now.  You have no idea how much this means from my family. Ham radio has been such a big part of my dads life.

Katherine Paynter

On August 18, 2015 the ham radio community in the Washington DC lost another long time ham, Calvin Cooley, WA3HPS ("hot potato salad").

Cal was 83 years old and he is survived by two daughters and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Cal grew up in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and earned a BS in Metallurgical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. He retired from US Steel. In retirement Cal worked ensuring the Washington DC parks department golf courses were safe and he enjoyed playing golf in his spare time.

Cal was also Vice President for many years of the Capital City Amateur Radio Society (CCARS) and he enjoyed operating CW on the HF bands. Cal was also active in OMIK at the time when the convention was held in Washington DC. His steady presence and sound judgement will be missed by the CCARS membership.

William ("Bill Jr") Gilliam, KB3FEB, (shown below in his ham shack on May 15, 2015) died from Cancer on July 15, 2015.

He is survived by his wife Diane, KB3FEA, his daughter Amber, and several sisters and brothers, and other relatives. Bill was retired and very active on the HF bands checking into various nets on a daily basis, including Sunday mornings on the OMIK 40meter net. He also chased DX and often would participate on the 20meter DX nets heard daily around 14.245mhz. He made friends via ham radio, all over the world.

On several occasions, Bill and Diane hosted field day events on their 10 acre "farm" in Croom, Maryland. Visitors to the farm would be treated to fascinating stories Bill would tell about his career installing sophisticated fire suppression systems in places like the Pentagon and other high security locations in the Washington DC area. Bill Jr would also take you to seek the livestock that sometimes inhabited their pastures and barns. His beloved Great Dane, Ceaser would happily accompany him.

Bill Jr's voice on HF worldwide and on two meters locally will be missed (but not forgotten)! RIP
-Charles D. Smith AI4OT

Ritner Nesbitt, N4BNM, has gone to be with the Lord. His key is now silent. Rit passed on January 31, 2014 at home.

We, in the ham radio fraternity and OMIK family are devastated to hear of Rit's passing. His enthusiasm for family, friends, and hobby was
extraordinary.

May the love and prayers of friends sustain the Nesbitt family during this difficult period.

Services for Ritner Nesbitt will be held on Saturday, February 8 at 2:00 PM at the Hanley/Shelton Funeral Directors, 473 Lawrence Street, Marietta ,GA 30060

Our thoughts and prayers for Pat and the family.

Below is a message from Pat received in April of 2014 to OMIK:

N4BNM-Ritner B. Nesbitt

I want to sincerely thank the OMIK family (this   organization is truly a family) for the cards, gifts and condolences sent to my family after Ritner's passing. I received so many calls from OMIK members and I truly, truly, appreciate the high esteem given to my husband.

I would like to express a special thank you and much love to Geno (N4GNO) who honored my husband and my family by playing taps at the grave site. His kindness will never be forgotten.

Ritner loved his radios. I would always say that his radios were his first love and I was his second and that was just fine by me. His hobby gave me the opportunity to meet and befriend some of you that will be with me until the day that I go to meet with him and I thank you for that.  Ritner's wish was that the OMIK organization would expand and grow, drawing in some of the younger generation. I know that with the age of technology that we live in, kids are more interested in cell phones, ipods, ipads and computers, but what they don't know is that if  all of the cell towers fail they won't be able to communicate with anyone. If they were HAMS, they would be able to communicate with the world.

Again I say thank you, thank you, thank you.
73's
Patricia Inman Nesbitt

It is with heavy heart that I report to you that Mr. H. Walcott Benjamin, Sr, EL2BA passed away this morning today Jan 4, 2014 at 7:07 AM.

Sunrise: February 8th, 1935
Sunset: January 4th, 2014

Ben also held the callsign V21WB and was President Emeritus of the Liberia Radio Amateur Association (LRAA).

I met Ben during my Fulbright year in Liberia and I interacted with him on subsequent sojourns there. I am looking at a certificate signed by him certifying that I had successfully completed a task . The last time I saw EL2BA was at an OMIK conference in Baltimore, Maryland, where I had a chance to meet and interact with his bride. Oh, what a memory to cherish. He is now a silent key - - a cherish silent key who will be remembered at the OMIK conference scheduled in July in the City of Savannah, Georgia.

Introduction to Ben was through one Henry H. Hali, KF2FP whose call at the time was EL7E. Brother Hali has kept me informed about Ben through the years, and I am sadden to now know that Ben's key is silent!

"May the soul of the departed rest in peace, and may God's perpetual light shine upon him."

Sadly, Romeo Phillips, KA8ZUK

Chuck Lindsey KQ6IU ( early bird net control. ) Chuck's brother-in-law had a stroke recently and is not doing well. Our prayers go out to Vi and Chuck.
